Similarly to dogs, cats enjoy the occasional grass grazing too. And just like their four-legged rivals - after chomping on the blades like it's a juicy piece of meat - they often end up throwing up their breakfast.
Is the odd nibble of grass bad for your pets?
Depends. It may surprise you, but eating grass can actually have numerous health benefits for your furry friends, including everything from boosting their immune system to acting as a natural stress relief. So let's find out!
Grass juice contains folic acid
Folic acid is a vitamin that supports your cat’s growth and helps increase oxygen levels in their blood. If you catch your cat sniffing, batting and tasting grass blades, it may be because he or she is battling a dietary deficiency and is in search of a vitamin boost.
It relieves an upset stomach
One of the most common theories behind why cats eat grass is that it helps with an upset stomach. Cats actually lack the necessary enzymes to digest a large amount of grass, which is why it can make them sick. In the process of throwing up, your cat clears their stomach of fur, feathers, parasites or bones that can irritate the digestive tract. This is also a common reason why dogs eat grass.
Natural laxative benefits
Gazing can also help with regulating bowel movements, something that’s especially important when their stomach, for example, is clogged with fur. Grass can actually work to help break it down, making it easier for them to pass it and relieve constipation.
So is it safe?
If eating grass makes your kitty sick, you’re probably concerned about their safety. Even though there really isn’t a definitive answer to why, a cat occasionally eating grass doesn’t cause any real harm as they will typically self-regulate the amount.
The problem starts when the grass has been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. In that case, keep your cats away from it and consider growing indoors specifically for them.
P.S. If your little carnivore begins to eat large amounts of it, it’s always best to consult your veterinarian!
